Very good play set and very durable. This is great for any Barbie doll. The mirror is very realistic and isn't like the reflective sticker stuff that many old Barbie mirrors used to be made out of. The smaller parts are also very well made, especially the "iPod" and the piggy bank that has a little slit for "coins". It also comes with a little box that opens and closes with "make-up" brushes and a little curling iron that opens and closes.

All the pieces to Mattel's Barbie Pink furniture line are adorable and are up to date with today's fashion and design conscience little girls, but wow, talk about all the little pieces that come along with the sets that seriously are a hazard to anyone who has animals in the house. After my daughter is finished playing with her Barbies and setting up house, I have to make sure each and every time that ALL the little pieces are retrieved for the sake of my pups. If it weren't for me worrying about my little dogs, I would rest easier. As a matter of fact, I wish I had so many options with my Barbies back in the 60's. Overall, the furniture is functional and the rooms are glam! She has a lot of fun playing with her Barbies and that's all that matters most.

The Dream Townhouse is roomy, spacious, has beautiful color options beyond pink and white (a nice blue hottub and middle section, for example), takes up little floor space by climbing the wall and has the dealbreaker for most kids: the working elevator. But assemblers are advised to put in batteries and test all electronics (flushing toilet, crackling fireplace, etc.) before assembling. That is, sadly, a necessity for ALL modern Barbie electronic toys since quality does vary greatly.

Deciding on a new home for Barbie:

The Townhouse, Malibu Dreamhouse, Beach House, Glam Vacation House, Pink World House, Fashion Fairytale Palace, Lightup Castle, etc. all offer something different for Barbie. In particular, the Townhouse is a much better deal when compared to the Malibu Dreamhouse for about 25% more, Barbie gets an elevator, a lot more furniture, and a house that takes up more wall space than floor space. As well, the Townhouse suits Barbie scale much better than the Malibu Dreamhouse, which can feel a bit crowded. The Glam Vacation House and Pink World house don't have much in the way of ceilings or floors (mostly just walls), so girls don't really feel like they have a 'house'. My 9 year old never really liked the Pink House it took up too much room in her floor and since it didn't have much of a floor, furniture fell over constantly on carpet. As for the fairytale DVD movie houses, they are built specifically for a character and regular Barbies may seem/feel very out of place. The Dream Townhouse gives plenty of roominess for a variety of the more inexpensive Barbies such as the fashionistas, whose articulated arms and legs go well with the Townhouse.

Assembling The Dream Townhouse

As noted above, install batteries and check all electronics before assembling. Mattel does have an assembly video that you can access as well (2011 version Dream Townhouse) to get an idea of how to put it together. But honestly, it wasn't that hard. Mattel has been smart and designed it such that you match up shapes to pieces (and pieces all come in different widths so they won't snap into the wrong place). This was the same case with the Monster High School Playset and made sure that you assembled once and were done (IKEA has also gone this route, thankfully!). Assembly ideally takes 20-30 minutes at most, including taking out of the package. The graphics are set/already there, thankfully, so no annoying stickers to put together.

Durability:

The houses of the past tended to be put together in room-sized pieces and so broke down fairly easily due to lack of a solid base. The Dream Townhouse comes with one solid 2 floor wall piece with folding, permanently attached floors. This gives some durability to the house. Once the floors are dropped, it is held together by the thick columns on each level. The penthouse level then fits onto the second floor top. The elevator has a track and fortunately the new design means that sagging parts don't cause it to fall out as easily. The newer 'softer' less brittle plastics of today often mean that the floors 'give' a bit and this does cause the elevator to be a bit creaky and stiff (especially compared to the Dream houses with elevators from the 1970s). The softer plastics also seem to contribute to the variations in track sizes for the elevators often requiring a bit of 'modification' if your elevator doesn't work well or as designed. But that said, this is MUCH better quality than the previous Dream Townhouse.

Aesthetics:

It's great to see barbie adding in more colors than Pink or white (though there was an odd yellow fold out house in the 1990s). This townhouse has blue flooring in the middle and a large blue tub on top, and there are some purples thrown in for variety (plus, many shades of pinks dark to light add interest). Note that the color isn't as saturated as in the images on Amazon so it isn't as eye wincingly bright. The house is a good scale for Barbie and the dolls don't feel crowded (though Ken might be a bit tall for the middle level). As well, it makes a beautiful display for Barbies when not in play.

Alternatives:

This is the top of the line Barbie house and is priced accordingly. Keep in mind that there are other alternatives if you don't want/need the Barbie branding or would like a house not made of plastic. KidCraft has an excellent line of full wood with full color graphics doll houses that are priced comparably to this house. Those doll houses are also Barbie-scale and ideal for a larger doll collection that may include Moxie, Bratz, etc.

Summary:

In all, this is an improvement and provides more value for money than the other Barbie houses. Quality variation issues keep this from being a 5 star product (as well as the hefty price) the elevator doesn't always work well and the electronics especially may not all work.

So I've become a pro at assembling this product because the first one was damaged & I had to ship it back for another one. Amazon was great at exchanging the product! My recommendation, which SHOULD be in the assembly directions as item #1...put the batteries in to make sure all the gadgets work before you assemble any of it...that would have saved me a headache!! If you follow the stupid directions, you wont be advised to put batteries in until the end, which could be too late, like in my case. Oh yeah, this product cannot be disassembled without breaking it apart, just in case you think you can take it apart to store it, not gonna happen.

The best news, my Girls love it! They think it's the coolest thing ever. I have to admit, it's quite grand in size; neither one has to compete for space when playing with it. If you're thinking of buying it, do it, especially while there's free shipping...but remember...Batteries go in first!

I start this review by saying I am a loyal and loving Amazon fan and have never had a bad experience. I also say that while dissappointing, this experience won't change my loyalty to Amazon. The only purpose of my review is to help other parents that may be considering ordering this toy from Amazon as a Christmas gift.

I ordered this item this past week for my daughter for Christmas. As always, it arrived right on time. The only trouble was the toy wasn't contained in the standard Amazon shipping box. So, my wife/daughter pull in from work/school and there is a beautiful Barbie Dreamhouse sitting on my front porch for all to see.

Reason I felt like sharing this info:

1) Had my wife not been witty and distracted my daughter, it would have blown the biggest Christmas surprise we plan on getting her.

2) The fact that it was exposed on my front porch (it is a large, bright, Barbie box) makes me feel lucky it wasn't stolen. All it would have taken was for the wrong person to ride by and it could have been easily taken.

Perhaps I am in the wrong for assuming the product would be covered by Amazon packaging. Either way, my advice to parents considering buying for Christmas, have it shipped to work or somewhere you can guarantee your child won't see and it won't be stolen.

Amazon, I still love you. Just want to keep others from making the poor assumption I made.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program My 10 year old daughter has been wanting a Barbie house for some time. She still loves playing with her Barbies, Monster High Dolls, etc. When I saw this available for review through Amazon Vine, I was ecstatic!! The box arrived yesterday and when my daughter got home from school we went to work assembling it. I put the house together while she put the stickers on everything. Total, I would say it took about 20 minutes to get everything situated. I do have to admit that when I took everything out of the box, I was a bit overwhelmed with the many pieces, however, after taking a deep breath and diving in, it was no where near as horrific as I thought it would be, lol. No tools are needed (other than a phillips screwdriver to take the battery cover off to insert the batteries 3 AA). All the pieces snap together though I must admit there were a couple pieces that didn't want to cooperate very easily, overall, very quick and simple. As a side note, be sure to insert the bottom/living room chandelier correctly otherwise it will not light up as it should.

I was actually pretty surprised and pleased with how durable this house seems to be. Yes, it is made of plastic, however it seems rather sturdy and as though it will hold up to tons of play. The electronic additions of the doorbell, lighted chandelier, toilet flushing, Barbie singing in the shower, light in the fridge and the crackling/light-up fireplace(my favorite as well as my daughters) are tons of fun. If you want to ensure that the sounds do not go off accidentally, there is an on/off switch near the battery compartment. The furnishings of the house are very contemporary, as well as the extra pieces there is a laptop, cellphone, flat-screen tv., and many "modern" types of play items included. The size of the house is perfect it is large, but not overtly so. There is plenty of room for several Barbie sized dolls and tons of imaginative play. The elevator works very well very smooth with the string pully and my daughter thought that was incredibly cool, lol.

I do have to note that my son who is 6, thinks it makes a pretty cool place for all of his wrestling guys to bop around in as well, lol. I asked my daughter how she would rate this house and she said "a definite 5!!". She played with it until bedtime last night and even got up early to play with it before school this morning. I have to admit that at 38, I thought it was pretty cool as well and exactly what I would have loved as a kid. Do I think it is worth the $140 -ish price tag? Honestly, yes. After seeing how well built it is, all the extras and how much room there is, I would not hesitate to buy this for my child a perfect Christmas present or Birthday present without a doubt!! There are a ton of different Barbie houses out there and I honestly think that for the price, this is the one to go with.

So for me personally, the wave 2 picture day dolls have so far been pretty hard to find at retailers. I have been scouring Target, Wal-Mart. etc, to no avail. So imagine my surprise when I found a lone Lagoona on the shelf at Toys R Us last night. Without a second thought I grabbed her up. Her hair this time is long, down to her waist, and predominantly yellowish blonde with blue streaks. It has a slight waves/curliness to it and a piece of her hair in the front is pulled over to the side. She has very pale pink eyeshadow at her lashline, with a darker hot pink along the crease of her eye, and iridescent glitter along her browbone. Her lips are a very light pastel pink. For accessories she wears a translucent yellow tentacle earring in her left ear, and a translucent pink rope and shell earring in her right ear. On her right wrist is a gold bracelet made of little connected balls, and her left wrist has a thin pink bracelet. Her dress is done in an A-line shape. The material has a teal backround with a print of pink orange and chartreuse coral and black fishbones and seahorses. The bodice of the dress is done with a shiny iridescent coral colored material. It has a little bow on the front that is shaped to look kind of like seashells (like the bra Ariel wore in the little mermaid). There is a thin iridescent ribbon tied around her neck and a lime green tulle ruffle at the hem of the dress. She wears a black fishnet short sleeve shrug over the dress. Under the dress, she wears some super cute capri leggings. The are bright pink with shiny silver dots all over them that make them shine and sparkle. Her metallic gold "rope" belt is adorable, and probably my favorite accessory of this particular doll. She carries a pink purse which is reminiscent of a sea urchin or anemone with a yellow seaweed strap. Her wedge slides are translucent teal blue and made of different size "bubbles" all stuck together. The wedge heel has some adorable little cutouts as well. She comes with a seafoam green folder/portfolio that actually opens up. It has a fishscale motif molded in the front as well as a little seahorse at the closure. Her included fearbook has a sheet of 16 mini stickers that show various monster high students in their best fearbook pose. It also has pictures of the staff, an autograph page with signatures of her classmates, and a group pic. She comes with a black stand and black brush.

I'm a collector of the dolls, I don't buy them as gifts for children or anything, but this particular doll disappointed me. I was so excited that they added a second wave of picture day dolls I have the first four, and this is my first of the second wave. But Lagoona's clothing struck me as very low quality. The leggings are that cheap, shiny material that you might find on a dollar store doll (don't know what it's called but I may upload pics), her purse is like a shower pouf made out of plastic, and the pink top to the dress is also cheap material i think it's called crinoline, and the ribbon to tie it to the back of her neck like a halter is a different material, also cheap and shiny/crinkly. Also her hair was completely matted in the back. That said, she's cuter in person than in the pic, but not happy with my purchase (that's what I get for buying at Walmart I guess). Also, not specific to this doll, but I can't stand that they've been giving the dolls earrings that don't match. Maybe I'm old fashioned. Swim Class Lagoona was also a huge disappointment due to quality I bought her here on amazon, but I guess you can't win them all. Over all, I guess I give her a 4/5. But after I take her "glamour" pictures, I'm changing her clothes and hair!

I bought a few of these as storage for my 18 inch dolls. Unlike the other reviewer I haven't had any trouble with the zippers at all. My one and only complaint with the design is that the pockets for accessories are in front of the doll, which isn't really an issue as long as you are careful what you put in there so you don't scratch the doll. For the price though I was pleasantly surprised. I also own the AG version (bought when it first came out) of this, and while I have to admit I like the AG version better for actual travel (the pocket issue is solved in the AG version), I see this one as a very nice alternative to paying the outrages prices of AG. Had this been around before I bought the AG one, I probably wouldn't have bothered with the AG version.

My daughter was so excited when this arrived in the mail. It was beautifully designed with lots of pockets for accessories. She loved the way her doll could look out the window in the front.

Unfortunately, the zipper malfunctioned almost immediately. After inspecting it, we discovered that not only was there no way to fix the zipper, but it appeared to be so poorly designed that we had little hope of success with a replacement.

We were hoping for a more affordable alternative to the $58 American Girl doll carrier, but at plus shipping and lasting 3 days, this was no bargain.

When my sister in law asked what she could get my daughters for their birthdays ( they are 3 weeks apart) I was so excited to recommend this item. My daughter was so excited when this doll arrived. Imagine her disappointment when she saw that one of the arms was broken. Unfortunately, like the reviewer in 2010, the damage was due to an underneath plastic moving part which made the arm useless. Apparently it's a defect they've decided not to fix since I made my purchase in May 2011. As you can see, my decision to buy rarely hinges solely on shipping issues but I must warn you. If you have this doll shipped, expect to have to return it at least once and get a new one.

Also, the doll's head has several plastic pieces in it which secure the head when it's in the box. You may find you can't pull them out once the doll is out of the box. Since they interfere with styling the mannequin's hair, you'll probably end up cutting them. If so you'll have to be very careful not to cut the doll's hair in the process. Once that's done, you'll have to press the remaining pieces into the mannequin's head or else they'll scratch your child. All this unnecessary effort and a hefty price too.

I admit it's a beautiful doll; that's why I bought it and my daughter really enjoys playing with it. But if I had to do it all over again, I'd buy it at a local store instead of having it shipped or better still, purchase a similar doll at a more affordable price from a different manufacturer.

It's a nice idea and was super excited to buy it for a christmas present. I came with both arms broken at the base. The arms are suppose to swivel a little bit so they can be polished and used with press on nails. The underneath plastic moving part was broken on both arms renering them useless.

I bought Madame Alexander dolls for three of my granddaughters, and feel that they are a much better buy than the other famous brand. I like that they have vinyl chests and backs part way down, rather than the white fabric starting at the neckline like the other dolls. They look so much better in their swimsuits and V-neck tops. I own two of these dolls, this one and the multi-ethnic doll from NY Bella. These dolls are extremely high quality, easily on par with American Girl dolls and A Life of Faith Dolls. The dolls are not all plastic like ALoF dolls, and their entire torso is not stuffed, like AG dolls. It's a hybrid thing where they have a vinyl breast plate so the dolls look good in sleeveless dresses and tops, but the lower torso including the rear end is stuffed, providing a softy part for hugging. Arms, legs, head and upper torso are all vinyl. Lower torso is stuffed.

The hair is very high quality, easy to style and perfect for hair play. The faces are attractive and look more like real people than most of the competition. Eyes are very pretty and open and close.

The dolls are a little taller than AG and ALoF dolls standing right over 19". This doesn't affect clothes swapping though, they are all pretty much interchangable. Vanange dolls have feet that are slightly smaller than AG and ALoF dolls, but the size difference is miniscule so shoes are still interchangeable for the most part. I found that the arm and leg length of Vanange dolls are slightly longer than AG, closer to that of ALoF. Once again the difference is negligible.

The doll arrives nicely packaged with a book at the bottom of the box, under the dolls feet and a cute little self esteem poster. The books do provide information about different cultures, although they wording is a little stilted in a few places and the pictures are not all as high quality as I would have liked. Still, they are useful and they have a slightly "homemade" quality about them that makes them kid-friendly. The books are definitely educational and jam packed with international information. The stories are encouraging to girls too, inspiring high self esteem and self-confidence and setting good examples for girls.

The dress is made from a shiny taffeta with a cotton cluny lace trim at the hem and a matching ribbon at the waist. The bodice is overlayed with white lace. The dresses, panties and shoes are top quality and fit the dolls perfectly. They're pretty too, which isn't always true in doll clothes these days.

My favorite part about these dolls is that they make up a rainbow of ethnicities. There is a colorful variety of skin, eye and hair colors, much more interesting than the selection provided by better known brands. I personally like Vanange dolls better than Karito Kids because they are closer in size to AG & ALoF dolls. Plus I find their faces and bodies more attractive and less cartoon-like.

Lastly the dolls all appear to be Christians. The books mention God here and there in a matter-of-fact sort of way. They aren't preachy in the least, but make it clear that the girls do have a fulfilling spiritual life. For me personally, this is a huge plus, I much prefer to spend my money on Christian products than secular products.

Vanange dolls are simply put, the best choice for discerning consumers. The dolls and their clothing are incredibly well made(the soft and full hair down to the shoes), but they are also PTHALATE and LEAD free, with 100% cotton filled bodice. I don't want my chi,d, or any child, cuddling up with toxic toys. I am so grateful Vanuzza has this beautiful line of dolls. We have several and would take just one of these dolls anyway to two or three plastic department store models. Try them. Your 5 year old will tell the difference right away. These dolls are special?

Best Deals for Vanange Luz Philippines Doll

My daughter received this doll as a gift from a well-meaning, non-Filipino friend. My daughter is 1/2 Filipino (I am full Filipino). I cannot begin to express my disappointment in this doll. Other than maybe the doll's name (Luz) and her straight black hair, there is nothing in the slightest way Filipino about this doll. She has blue eyes (really?), her skin is far too fair (she looks caucasian). and there is no indication in dress or otherwise that the doll is supposed to be Filipino. Honestly, if you were to show me the doll, sans box and book, and ask me to name her ethnicity, I probably would choose Irish. And she's supposed to have her yellow belt in tae-kwon-do? Um, last time I checked, tae-kwon-do is a KOREAN martial art. So now the message is that all Asians and their hobbies are pretty much the same? I'm horrified.

Look, I'm not saying that I would want the doll to be a caricature of a traditional Filipina, complete with butterfly sleeves and the whole bit, and I'm also aware that Filipinos come in all shapes, colors and hues, but this doll is so far, far, far off the mark, that it borders on the absurd. If Vanange is going to take the time to put out a line of multi-cultural dolls to provide cultural awareness of the various ethnicities in the world, they should at least take the time to be more accurate in their design of the one Asian/Pacific Islander doll that they offer. And they certainly should not further perpetuate the colonialist aesthetic standard that says that a "mestiza" (a female of mixed Filipino and foreign typically European ancestry) is more beautiful and desirable than a native "indio" Filipina, because that's what this doll essentially does. As a result, I will not be giving this doll to my daughter.

My five-year-old loves Victorious, and she loves this doll, its a bit pricey if you ask me. The microphone and necklace won't stay on no matter how hard you try and the tiny little brush will be lost in her toy box in few days, she would have been fine without those miscellaneous things and the doll would have probably been a little cheaper then $25!!

Obviously, I didn't get this for myself. I ordered this doll after hearing a young relative rant and rave about how much she loves to watch the show "victorious". I personally have never even heard of it. So after spending the day shopping in a store, I came across this doll, for quite a hefty price I might add. The price was supposed to be a "sale price"...yeah right.

So, as I usually do, I came home and checked on amazon for the exact same product. And not surprisingly, I found the doll at about half the price of what I would have paid in the store, and free shipping.

Now, on to the doll itself. This doll has remarkable appearance in comparison to its human counterpart. I opened the box very carefully to test it out and make sure it worked properly. This doll sings well and would sound great to a child. It really is probably the best deal I have found this year, and I know that she will love it. Great product that seems as though will last a long time, with heavy abuse by a six year old.

I bought this for my daughter for Christmas. She will love it!! It arrived today, nicely packaged! I honestly had no idea what to expect, and was pleasantly surprised. My five year old daughter loves Victorious. The doll sings when her arm is up and stops when you put it down. She loves how it sings the whole song too instead of just a snip of it. The only down side is that if you don't turn off the button on the back and you keep the arm up, it will sing continuously for who knows how long. Until the batteries die I guess.
