Our kids, 5 years, and 20 months old, go this as a Christmas present. It has been played with constantly since. We have not had any issues with it yet. Will comment later if any come up. Melissa and doug have probably fixed the key hole problem mentioned in the other review (from a few years ago). I cannot imagine them falling out they way they are today. The baby loves to play with the little people putting them in and out, and of course, ringing the "ding dong"s. The five year old loves to lock the doors so that her little sister cannot play with the little dolls. But we secretly hide the big girls other toys in there while she is at school!

We have purchased this for a friends birthday party that is coming up. She loved to play with it too when over for a playdate! Only bummer is that the dolls are white. Wish there was a choice on skin tone.

UPDATE 10-13-2012: Original review in 2011... Gave this toy to a neighbor friend's little boy and it is still going strong. He loves it and hides all sorts of stuff behind the doors. It has held up really well.

I purchased this toy based on my past experiences with the wonderful quality of Melissa & Doug products--also the fact that my 3 year-old son sat on the floor of the toystore and played with this (w/o batteries) for over a 1/2 hour! He is not the type of child to beg for a toy, but he didn't want to leave this one behind.

We bought it, got the batteries in, and he has been playing with it ever since. However, just hours after playing with it, the locks started falling out of the doors. They pop back on easily, but he can't do it himself. Also, now I have to worry about the pieces getting lost.

I'm really surprised at the shoddy quality of the locks and the doors (you have to pull them open with your thumb--making it easier for the locks to snap out of place). For the price of this toy (I spent $33 on it at a novelty toy shop) it should be sturdier. Since we purchased this on vacation at a resort town, I am unable to return it. I also know my son would be heartbroken if I took it back.

I plan on contacting Melissa & Doug regarding this. I hope they can help out b/c we have been huge fans of their products for years!

My daughter (3.5 yrs) got this as a gift, and she was thrilled with it at first. The doorbells are fun to ring (you have to put in batteries, 2 AAA, not included)

One thing that we noticed is that one of the doorbells seems to stick and you have to press it "just right" to get it to work, the other 3 work fine.

My daughter has had a lot of practice with hand-eye coordination, etc, and she can even string beads easily on a string. Yet, she has some trouble with some of the keys with this set. Mostly the "C" shaped one, as it is a bit tricky to maneuver.

Overall, for the price? the dolls that come with it (4) are nice and my daughter uses them with her dollhouse, too. So I would say this is a good choice to go with.

Cons:

keys can be hard to do for toddlers

the straps that they keys are on is attached to the top (which is good, won't lose the keys) but the strap could be slightly longer.. it's just barely long enough and it would be easier for kids if it was longer, for them to be able to turn the keys better.

After posting my "not so great quality review", I contacted Melissa and Doug directly. They were very responsive to my complaint. They stressed how quality control was of the utmost importance to them and they insisted on RESOLVING the issue. M&D made arrangements to have my product picked up by UPS to examine my doorbell house as well as to send me a brand new one. I also returned the fishbowl toy purchased a while back which the opening was a bit tight for the octupus to be pulled out/put in. They replaced both products promptly and personally examined each to make sure they were PERFECT and they were. M&D were just WONDERFUL. PLEASE follow through by contacting them directly and do not accept any product if it is not satisfactory. If you ever have any dissatisfaction with your Melissa and Doug item, be sure to contact them at 800-284-3948 so that they can resolve your issue. They definitely want total satisfaction by their customers and will do it with great kindness. They have the BEST designed and thought out products in the industry.

Not sure why this has a high rating but sure it is mostly for the concept. Melissa and Doug I associate with awesome creativity as well as quality. The M&D wooden doorbell house is SUCH POOR QUALITY and having read all the reviews, sounds like this has been an ongoing disaster. One review stated he was sure these defects have probably been corrected WRONG.

The key string was too short and needed to be cut off. One of the metal keyholes on lock was not punched out thus key unable to be inserted. The lock on one door pushed through and out of the cutout hole and landed inside on the floor. The pressed paper on the outside of the house was peeling off a door PLUS one doorbell did not work.

One reviewer said she had to place 7 additional orders to find 2 that were

My 20 months nephew loves playing with doors and I thought it would be a fun gift for him. I received the first order and one of the doors just won't open. I got a replacement unit, then one of the doorbell doesn't function properly sometimes it rings and sometimes it doesn't. There are also minor scratches on the wooden door and the locks. I have to say though it's a very sophisticated design and it's a lovely unit. My nephew loves putting the baby doll in and out of the house and enjoys listening to the door bell. But I think because of the complexity of the design the product is not as sturdy and door locks don't function smoothly. Melissa and Doug have some great creative toys but this one is disappointing.

I actually purchased this doll for my grandmother who has recently been admitted to a nursing home due to Alzheimer's\Dementia. She had mentioned several times that she would like a 'baby that looks real and has a hat' so I found this doll and ordered it for her. She was overjoyed with her new baby. It is so lifelike, even has dimples and 'baby fat rolls'. The doll is lightweight, so it is not a problem for my grandmother (who is very weak) to hold it. It is small enough that she can lay it in the bed with her or carry it with her in her wheelchair. My three year old daughter loved this baby doll as well, so it looks like I will be ordering another one so she can have her own!

I was so excited to get this doll for my 4 year old daughter. She often plays mommy and neede a more realistic baby doll. The doll arrived and looked beautiful in her package which stated 'realistic girl'. I wrapped her up and placed her under the Christmas tree. On Christmas morning my daughter opened up her dolly and was thrilled! Within moments we had her out of the box and my little girl was eager to change baby's diaper, but upon removing this dolls pink outfit we were very surprised to see an uncircumcised penis! Yikes!

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has had a surprise when taking the outfit off. I bought both the pink and purple polka dot "real life" little girls for my daughters for Christmas. Then I thought I would get one for my youngest daughter when she turned 2, and ordered another pink polka dot little girl a week later. She turned 2 this past weekend. When I took the outfit off to change her into another little girl outfit, I also discovered a little boy instead! But she could care less for now, a baby doll is a baby doll to her. But now my other two girls want a little boy for Christmas. Guess we'll see what Santa brings them.

This must be the third set of these socks I've ordered, and they're just as cute and useful as the first. For 'little girl' style ruffled socks, the lace-cuffed ones are hard to beat, and the plain ones can be worn cuffed in a more every-day or sporty fashion, or pull up beautifully to make knee-highs for 1940's outfits or all sort of other occasions. They fit great, aren't too thick to fit in most of the 18 inch doll shoes we have, and so long as you keep them away from Velcro, they last quite nicely (don't unravel.) They are polyester, though, not cotton, I don't know if that gets mentioned anywhere, soft and stretchy. Not your typical tough socks to go with sneakers, if that's the style you're looking for. These are more dressy, and more dainty (sorry about the outmoded vocabulary.)

The detail on this set is wonderful, as with all Calico Critters products. I love all the accessories that come with this set, too. The armoire opens and you can put your extra clothes in it. However, it is very hard to hang them on the hangers and hang them on the bar, so we just put them in there and close the door. (The door stays closed)

My favorite piece is the vanity. The mirrors are on hinges like a real vanity and it comes with the cutest bottles to place on it. The only thing I'm not really crazy about (but can live with) is the cover for the bed. It does not lie flat on the bed. Maybe some ironing will help it to lie flat, but I own a steamer and no iron so I can't try it.

All in all, we love this bedroom set.

This is a really cute Calico Critters furniture set! Very detailed, it will provide tons of fun for your daughter.

The main pieces are a bed, vanity and armoire. They are all made from white plastic. I'm not sure what the scale is, but it seems to be somewhere between 1:12 and 1:24. The vanity stands 3 1/2" high, the armoire is 4" high, and the bed platform is 2 1/2" by 4 1/2". It is a girl's room, but Calico parents will also fit on the bed. If you are buying this set to use with other figures, note that there is no footboard on the bed, so a bigger figure can still use the bed, if you don't mind their feet hanging off!

The bed platform is plain, but the headboard has a shaped top with heart and dot designs molded in, and lavendar bedknobs. It also comes with a light pink fabric/foam mattress, a pink floral pillow and a pink floral coverlet. The pillow is decorated with lace on the sides. The coverlet is really nice it has an attached ruffled skirt with lace trim, flat lace down the center and a white ribbon bow at the top. It doesn't really hang on the bed the sides stick straight out, but is nicely styled way better than the bedspreads on most doll house furntiure.

The vanity has some molded floral design at the top, but also has a lavendar vine design printed on the doors. The vanity has two working doors with gray plastic handles. Inside the doors is a mirror, and the back of the doors are also mirrored. It also features a working drawer with gray plastic handle. The stool is round with a removeable, flocked lavender top. I like this stool, because it is wide enough so that it is easy for my girls to actually sit their critters on it.

The armoire matches the vanity with molded floral design and Lavender printed vines. Its two doors (with gray handles) open wide. Inside you will find a small mirrow with metal hanging bar on one door, and a hanger bar inside. There are also plastic hangers. My daughter hangs 2 dresses in the armoire, and she has had no problems keeping the doors closed.

As with all Calico Critter sets, there are many accessories. A small night table has a pedestal base and a lavender top. A simple lavender rug has ribbon trim, and the matching round pillow has lace trim. My 11 year old loves the vanity tray. The tray is light brown and has a molded wicker design, and holds little (and I mean little!) lotion and perfume bottles. There is also a tiny trinket box with removable lid, alarm clock and double picture frame. It came with other small accessories, but these are the favorites. Note the picture shows curtains, but they don't come with this set. If you are thinking about buying this set for a younger child, the furniture is totally appropriate, but the accessories will probably get lost (at least that's how it works in my house!)

We bought this set to go into a larger dollhouse, because my daughter prefered a girl's room to a nursery. As I said, the scale is smaller than 1:12, but the furniture still looks great in our house. As with all our Calico Critters furniture, this set is both stylish and well-made.

Bottom Line If you are looking for a girls room, this is a great choice.

This is a great toy. It is well designed and well made. The carriage rolls well. My girls clip leashes on each of theirs and pull them around the house. Then, when they grab and pull the handle up, their dolls can fly all over the house at the push of a button. The dolls feet dangle and they stay securely in their seats thanks to seat belts. My girls love roller coasters and fly the dolls around sometimes pretending they are on a ride. The doors have popped off once or twice from the carriage but they go right back on. This was worth the money. One of their favorite Christmas toys!

This is a cute concept and idea the carriage from the movie has a canopy that 'pops up' when you push a button on top. It turns into a balloon (and looks like a balloon full of air). The handle on top can be used to carry the dolls through the air since the inside seats separate from the carriage bottom.

We did have a wheel fall off immediately and popped it back on. And honestly, my 7 year old didn't like that it didn't have a horse. I think girls love the horses as much as the carriages themselves.

In all, I do feel for the quality that it is very overpriced at MSRP. I'll see how long it lasts.

One of the legs broke off at the knee after 4 days of use. Very poor quality design of the knee joint. lower leg can be rotated 360 degrees and once the lower leg is rotated it snaps off if you attempt to bend the leg in any position. The plastic that holds the knee together is the size of a tooth pick. DO NOT BUY this for a kid for a toy. If you plan to collect it and leave it in the box it would be fine.

Thankfully, I found a similar item that's has the same dolls and fewer accessories for a reasonable price. I would have liked to buy the one from AMAZON but I'm unsure how much my granddaughter will play with it. They are both made by MATTEL; just one set has fewer dresses and accessories.
