Well, it is a little bit complicated to review. First of all, I would like to stress upfront that three stars is for house, not for Calico Critters characters, which I would rate with four or five stars. I do not know where to start. I think Calico Critters, in general, represent the very spirit of childhood, with their innocence, goodness and last, but not least magic. I always felt a little uneasy when my daughter played with Barbies, with their soulless sex crazed faces, and Sport Illustrated bodies, and I think sometimes that with that pronounced primitive consumerism added, Barbie as a character is slightly pornographic and is not good as a toy for a 6-8 years girl. Yet when my daughter was 5 and 6, she played with Barbies, and when she was 7, she discovered Calico Critters and ...switched to play with them, and she can't stop, and she is 8 now. And it makes me happy, too.

Everyone with aesthetic taste will tell you that Calico Critters possess that power of image and character, that makes a figure or picture a piece of art. Their appeal is universal, and... my 12 years son is helping his sister to play and to make a short stop motion animation movie with them.

They are somewhat on costly side for parents with relatively limited means, like we are, but after we bought for her a couple of sets of Critters, they needed a place to live, and this cozy cottage is the best deal we found for her 8 birthday.

For fifty dollars it includes: made from good quality plastic a sturdy little house with two floors, one character and some forniture. the second floor can be removed and turned and become a back or front yard lawn.

For people who complain that there is no wall paper, I say maybe. For those who say the characters and the house are too small, I found that their portability is a plus, and she can lift the house with one hand, and go to play to another room, for example. I would say, the world of little fuzzy creatures is perfect for my daughter, and she is begging already to add a townhouse for her 9th birthday. Which is another ninety dollars plus NY sales tax.

To summarize, if your child already has Critters, but they are still homeless, they need a shelter, and the cozy cottage is a good deal. Customers, who think a generic house would be better, might be also right, but for that matter, someone with wood working skills could make a house for Calico Critters by himself. The main thing is that in child's imagination even a little house like cozy cottage is a completely different game, on a better level, and it makes her so happy!

My daughter received this for Christmas. She likes it and plays with it a lot. We got a camping set with a kitty to supplement it. The quality of the furniture is OK. It is a little spartan looking, and if you want it to look like it does in the one photo, you will have to do some clever work with your hands. The other photos give a good idea of what it is though.

My 4 year old daughter loved receiving this for her birthday. She didn't even know what it was at first, but was instantly excited when dressed up cats were involved! 1 month later and I still find the kitties all over my house because she loves playing with them. She doesn't seem to use the house as much, but I think if we got her a few more furniture pieces she would be a little more into it. She loves dressing the cats over and over. Very well made, and is a classic "pretend play" toy, even from my childhood.
