first off, i would like to say that we love the lalaloopsy dolls. they are cute, and retain that sweet innocence missing from so many little girl toys these days.

but on to coral. we bought 2 of these dolls, 1 for each of our girls, as a reward. they adore their corals, and took them to grandma and grandpa's pool the first day they got them. the dolls and their mermaid outfits performed splendidly in the water. due to their large heads, the dolls actually float, which we weren't expecting. the girls played with them in the pool for a good 1 1/2 hours before we took them out. that being said, i would not really recommend the dolls for water play, either in the pool or in the tub. coral's head sucks up a large amount of water, and it is not easy to get it out. the dolls have a small drainage hole in the back of their heads, but let me tell you, it is not sufficient. my husband had to drill another small hole in the back of the dolls' heads, and one in each pigtail. then we had to squeeze all the water out. and squeeze... and squeeze. (oh, and the body gets water in it too, at the arm and leg joints) then the corals had to sit propped up over a heating vent to dry up excess water. not much fun when our girls had to wait for nearly 3 hours to play with their dolls. now, the water issue probably wouldn't be a big deal with a $1 rubber ducky, but the corals were not cheap. $28 each at target. not worth it to risk getting nasty mold growing in their heads. ew. especially when they have just as much play value outside of the water.

in the end, the girls decided play with their coral dolls exclusively outside of the water.

we would still recommend buying coral sea shells, if your daughter(s) like lalaloopsy dolls, just with a hint of caution. i hope this info helps! :) Molly Kim

Like the other reviewers on here, we love all things La La Loopsy in our house. We have several dolls and my girls spend hours playing with them. Both girls were dying for Coral, so we got her for my daughter's birthday. I knew from learning the hard way that the other dolls were not meant to get wet, as they get water in their heads that doesn't come out. I never thought this would be the case with a doll that was designed to get wet! But when my kids played with her in the tub the first day(yesterday), they got about 2/3 of the water out and the rest stayed in. I left her in the sink overnight, thinking it would drain. No such luck. I've shaken it and squeezed it and there's still water in there. And when they carry her around the water drips out and gets on my furniture. I'm really disappointed in this one. And there's no way I can tell a 5 and 6 year old not to play with a mermaid doll in the water, and I have no desire to spend an hour shaking and squeezing her head every time they play with her.

My 4 year old daughter has been so excited to get this doll. Excited to play with it in the bathtub or a pool or wherever. When she got in the bathtub the first thing she said was "her hair isn't changing colors." I found the instructions in which it says her hair changes colors in ice cold water. This is the most misleading commercial and doll that has been created and we are very disappointed. I went back to listen to the commercial girls are playing with her in the water and you see her hair change colors back and forth. It's not ice cold water. What kid plays in ice cold water? And then I notice at the very end of the commercial in extremely fast words they say "hair changes in cold water." Who would even hear that? But regardless...no child plays in cold water. And we have noticed that if my daughter has been playing in a warm bath and then she wants to put her in cold water, it changes immediately back because the doll is warm. We actually have to let the doll sit and go back to room temperature before the hair will even change. This is ridiculous. I don't have the receipt or at least I can't find it at the moment, but I would have taken it back to the store and I'm still going to try. They have mislead the customers and these kids and we spent $30 on a doll that doesn't do what they portray it as. Very disappointed.

Honest reviews on MGA Lalaloopsy Sew Magical Mermaid Doll - Coral Sea Shells

I thought I'd write a review for those wondering about the color change issues with this doll's hair. I purchased this for about $29 at Target (still expensive but cheaper than Amazon). They had 4 in stock. All of them had purple hair (dry on the shelf), not pink like in the ads. But we want ahead and got one. (Note: I recommend buying this doll in person because most of the mermaid suits had issues...one was sewn crooked at the top, and two of them had the bottom flipper sewn on very crooked).

After we got our purple-haired doll home I ran her head under hot water and it turned pink. It stayed that way in our 68-degree house after it dried for a half hour or so, but then it gets more purple-ish depending on the weather (cold outside=purple hair). When my daughter touches and cuddles the doll it turns pink again. Don't use a blow dryer to get it to stay pink because apparently this could damage the color-change ability. The instructions note that eventually the color-change effect of the hair will die out, and that leaving it in the sun may damage it.

Anyway, here's the text:

Important Note:

Limit outdoor play as the color change feature will be diminished if the doll is exposed to direct sunlight for a period of time. DO NOT LEAVE THE DOLL OUTSIDE IN DIRECT SUNLIGHT.

COLOR CHANGE:

1) Fill a container with icy water (Approsimately 65 F/18 C or colder).

2) Dunk your Lalaloopsy Coral Sea Shells doll head-first for 10-20 seconds.

3) Wow! Her hair has immediately changed color!

4) Reset her hair back to the original color by dunking her in a container filled with warm water (approximately 75 F/24 C or warmer).

NOTE: DO NOT use very hot water.

IMPORTANT COLOR CHANGE TEMPERATURE NOTES

NOTE: The color change works best and fastest if the water is icy cold.

If color change does not work properly or quickly, the temperature of your Lalaloopsy doll's hair may be too close to the temperature of the water.

Color change temperatures may vary according to weather conditions.

The color-change effect of the doll's hair has a lengthy but limited lifespan

First of all, I bought this one in the store for my Ellaloopsy for just over $20 at Walmart, so I'd recommend shopping around and price checking on this beauty. When Ella first saw her she absolutly fell in love with her as she loves Lalaloopsies and Mermaids; even I thought she was by far the prettiest of all the Lalaloopsies I have seen thus far. The online pictures just don't do her justice. Partly, I think it's the clothes, her mermaid tail is so shimmery and shiny and beautiful, it's just exquisite, and with the way it catches light in person it's lovely, on film it doesn't reflect that quite as well. She also has a super cute one-piece bathing suit she can change into for "human-form" for at the beach, pool, or bath tub. I love that it is a very modest, innocent, little girl, one piece bathing suit and NOT a bikini. Then she has red hair and it's done pulled in low back piggie tails with a light-blue bow but changes to a pretty purple when wet, which Ella loves! Ella hates bath time, what kid doesn't? But ever since she got her mermaid lalaloopsy it has been SO much easier getting her into the tub lately! She always takes her tail off, she seemed to understand that was made of "better material" and even though she was a mermaid, she needed her swimsuit on to get wet, lol. She really liked that she came with a fish pet, too, to go in the tub with her, and named him Flounder, of course. Definitly an adorable set and must-have for any LaLaloopsy/Mermaid fan, my little girl loves it and it makes bathtime at our house a lot easier! As far as water, I was worried about it "collecting" in the large loopsy head, so I warned Ella just not to hold her under or anything (lol, you should have seen the look that earned me, as if I thought she was drowning her babies when I wasn't looking, how dare I suggest such a thing?) but it doesn't seem to collect anything so far and the body is solid. Whatever does get in drains completely, nothing runs out when I pick it up after it's dried out.
