Review of Barbie In a Mermaid Tale 2 Mermaid South America Doll

I bought this for my 5 y.o. daughter last week at another store so she could physically pick out which Barbie she wanted under $15. The package states that her fin changes color in ICY water. So we put Barbie's bottom half in very cold water (about 50° well water from our tap)no change. Then I threw ice in said water with Barbieno change. Then my daughter was do disappointed that I threw the whole damn doll in the freezer for a good 5 minutesno change! So I tried to contact Mattelwhich is no easy feat, let me tell you, and they promised to send a voucher for any Mattel merchandise in the amount of $13. $13 because that's the average retail price of this doll. I'm glad I paid less. They may have tried to make the situation right but my daughter will never let me hear the end of the "Barbie that's broke" story.

Also, this doll keeps letting little white floaties out of her tail every time she's in water. Not sure if it's little bits of plastic from the the finishing process or what but I sure wouldn't want those in my child's bath water! Luckily my daughter has only put Barbie in the sink, but I can just imagine what a parent would think if this were in the tub with your kidyou have no way of knowing what this white stuff is! Not only that, but her tail retains water and it doesn't come off the body (there's no legs under her molded plastic tail) so if not shaken repeatedly upside down and all around, you won't get all the water out which could get yucky in there after a while.

Overall, the $11 and change we paid for this doll was just too much, I could have gotten something with this quality at a dollar store!

As with all the Barbie movies, the supporting characters tend to get short treatment. They are usually the cheapest of the cheap Barbie dolls. These are a bit better than usual, however.

This character is one of the ambassadors in the TV series her name is Mirabella(though she wears a ponytail in the movie). She does have several speaking parts, which is really nice for a supporting character doll. She is the sweeter, more mystical feeling of the ambassadors.

For this doll, the South America, she has strawberry blonde hair. All of the tail and the top are molded onto the body and have very little in the way of extra detailing. This one has a bit of two toned pinks brushed on but that's about it. She does bend a little bit but not much. Her tail doesn't spin or move it just clicks in. She isn't really posable all arms and tail/legs are molded and not articulated.

To show that she is a South American doll, her top and tail have jewelry inspired by South American cultures.

IIn all, these are very inexpensive and make good toys in and out of the bathtub. The price means they lack some details but the price also makes it easy to get the entire set to play along with the movie.
