My 5.5 yr old asked Santa for an American Girl Doll, but she's not old enough to care for such an expensive doll. This is the best alternative I could find! And better in some ways.

PROS: *The MA dolls have plastic on the top of the torso and fabric from the "sternum" down... looks much more "real" with clothes that show the neckline instead of all fabric torsos, like the AG dolls and Our Generation dolls.

*Nice long hair, just survived the first brushing and put it in braids to keep tangles at bay. She has a nice full head of hair, unlike the OG & Springfield dolls I saw. The ends are a little choppy, but not bad.

*She's easy to dress, and I'm very impressed with the MA clothes... nice quality, lined with a nylon fabric so it's easier to slide on and off!

CONS: *Her head is posable, and moves around pretty easily. Almost Exorcist-like! She doesn't sit. And I can see what the other reviewer might be talking about with the leg. Ours looks loose, so we'll have to keep an eye on her. The black Mary Jane shoes that come with this doll are hard and tricky to fasten.

But overall, this doll is a HUGE hit!!

With more than one young granddaughter in the family (and another on the way), these Madame Alexander dolls are a beautiful and cost-effective alternative to the American Girl dolls. I have had Madame Alexanders since I was a child and they are sturdy, beautiful, and the catalyst for many hours of fun fueled by imagination. I highly recommend these dolls for hours of dress-up fun.

My 7 year old suddenly announced all she wanted was an American Girl doll for Christmas this year. She isn't a doll kind of kid so I had sticker shock of the cost. For something that is coming purely from "what all the other girls have" kind of request, I set out looking at options. After talking with doll enthusiasts, I settled on a Madame Alexander doll. As one crafter who had both a AG doll and a Madame Alexander doll, the M.A. doll's hair is nicer. As I had heard some cheaper "knock-offs" have cheaper material so faces cave in, etc, I was very pleased when I received this doll. Her eyes work well, the limbs move freely, and the hair has withstood the combing of several 7 year old girls.

As another note, I had looked at another MA doll with curly hair. I really liked the outfit, hairstyle, etc better but now seeing how the girls love to comb the hair, that curly hair would have been a rats nest by now.

This doll is a cheaper alternative to The American Girl Doll that both my girls wanted. I think on every count it is just as attractive and well made as the other dolls in this category and maybe prettier even than some. My only complaint is that the hair is not as nice as what is pictured. I bought this doll and another Madame Alexander Doll and both arrived with less than beautiful hair.

I love the doll which is a gift for my grandchild. When she arrived her shipping box was smashed in a on one side and therefore so was her packaging. That was okay, but her hair is a bit messier than i want for a gift. Not sure whose fault the messy hair is, but if the package was thrown around enough handling could have caused it. Except for that the doll is pretty, better looking i think than the more expensive American Girl Dolls. If not for my granddaughter specifically wanting an American Girl, i would buy her a friend for her doll by purchasing another one of these...also, her outfit is adorable!
