Whilst nice to find an African-american doll (Unbelievably, still hard to get in the UK) why are all the African American Barbies SOOOO light in complexion and soooo vague in African features. I am aware that Barbie launched the "So in Style" range, which feature wise do a little better although still very light complexioned and STILL with pole straight hair. But "SiS" dolls are incredibly precocious. At least these Mermaid/Fairy/Princess Barbies are a bit more suited to younger girls, who aren't concerned with looks and clothes yet. But being my first time looking for Barbie type dolls makes me so sad to see in 2012 so little representation for young black girls to see a reflection of themselves.
I had hoped the doll had a removable tail and "Ta-da!" legs underneath, but this isn't the case. She is a permanent Mermaid! But is jointed at the waist so can flick her tail in style!
Her arms aren't posable but her crown can be removed (had to cut it off as was attached with quite a lot of cotton thread that showed through her hair).
In an attempt to try and present a more natural image of african beauty to my daughter that I don't think I am ever going to get from manufacturers, I have actually locksed this dolls hair ! Easy enough to do with a bit of patience, care and an iron on low (wool) setting. There are video tutorials you can find on You Tube.
She Actually looks fantastic with locks and creates a whole different vibe to the doll. Now my daughter will have a doll she can relate to. Not more false visions of african "beauty" warped with endless straight tresses!
Please Mattel, get with the programme. Natural African beauty is the way to go !

My little girl wanted this mermaid Barbie because she was Egyptian. We could not get it it in England, as the only people selling it wanted silly money for it, so we ordered it from the U.S and were not disappointed. It is nice to have a Barbie who looks different and the colours are so pretty. We play with it in the bath ! I bought this as a stocking stuffer for Christmas. It is now my daughters favorite bath time toy. My only issue is it only changes color in the design on her waist. my niece loves it and great quality worksmanship. I love that it is african american doll as well because that way different colored children can relate to the doll.
