Kai-Lan does pretty much everything you see her do when she's in demo mode on the store shelf. She tilts her big head back and forth, and her eyes move around as she sings and the heart on her shirt changes colors. She sings a few short songs and that's about it for her features. You don't plug her into your computer to transfer new songs over, or anything like that.
The problems are with how Kai-Lan is made. She's all plastic with real clothes. There's no cuddle factor, and I can't see any youngsters carrying this thing around because of how heavy it is, and without breaking it once they drop it somewhere. One fall and this thing is toast, as many others have said. There's also an apparent fire hazard with this toy because of the motor inside, and I don't think that's something any parent wants to have around their child. I'm wondering if that's why I saw so many of these for super low prices recently.
I wouldn't recommend spending a lot on this toy. It's big, heavy, and the motor inside is pretty loud. If this were from any other show, I'm sure it wouldn't cost as much. The songs it sings are cute, but there are many other Kai-Lan toys out there, some of which include the same feature for less.

Just took this doll away from my daughter... she was playing quietly with us watching. So cute.Until we saw the little puff of smoke.
Looking inside, it appears the problem is with the motor. Total defective design. The head is as big as the body, and moves. It shouldn't be supprising th anybody that this big melon head looking doll will attact the attention of a child who *will* prevent the head from moving from time to time, but the motor (at least in this case) couldn't tollerate that, and started burning up. To drive the point home, I note the batteries are also very hot.
Maybe its an isolated case, but something to keep in mind.
Best Deals for Fisher-Price Super Special Friend Kai - Lan
Kai-Lan is my son's favorite cartoon, so I was really excited to get this for him. Less than 1 month after we bought it, there was a major problem. I noticed the heart was staying lit up. I couldn't get her to talk or anything so I thought maybe it was the batteries. I changed the batteries. She still wouldn't talk, the heart was still lit up, and there was a horrible burning smell. I immediately removed the batteries because I was afraid it would catch on fire. I am so glad that I noticed the heart that was lit up. I can't help but think about what would happened if I had not seen it. I would hope that any toy meant for a child would be safer than this. It is very disappointing that it would only last a few weeks. I feel this is a very dangerous toy & should be recalled. When I called Fisher-Price, I kept being transferred between Fisher-Price and Mattel. Each kept saying this was not made by them, but by the other company. Finally, I reached someone that could help me. I had to send the doll to them, and they are going to send me a refund check. If you have had a problem, please call the company to complain!!
