Review of Barbie So In Style (S.I.S.) Rocawear Chandra Doll

As a grownup doll collector I have not bought a Barbie in a few years. So many cool dolls like Liv, Moxie and Bratz have come out recently that (for me anyway) Barbie has been overshadowed. So In Style dolls however, really put Barbie back in the spotlight. Mattel finally did something that practically no other toy companies have done. They created a realistic looking African-American doll! The dolls in the S.I.S. line come with a variety of skin tones and also have varied hair textures, just like real people.

Chandra has the darkest complexion of the So In Style series and her skin tone and facial features are beautiful and real looking. I really like the artistry and detail of the face. She has a cute, tasteful outfit and medium length straight hair that is good quality and brushable. Her makeup is done in lovely warm colors and she has golden-brown eyes that gaze to one side, reminiscent of the original 1950's Barbie. This unique facial expression gives Chandra a certain elegance, lots of character and sets her apart because most other modern Barbie dolls (including the other S.I.S. dolls) have a forward facing gaze. I could not resist adding her to my collection!

I would really like to see Barbie expand and include dolls of other races like maybe Hispanic or Asian. Barbie has had many stereotypical blue-eyed blonds over the years and every collector probably has loads of Barbies with the same facial structure and hair color. I myself am blonde but even as a kid, I always had dolls (and friends!) of all colors. One other cute detail on the packaging: The S.I.S. logo features a Barbie motif with a curly ponytail rather than the usual straight-haired one.

I think it is great for the self-esteem of kids when they can find a toy that looks like them. I hope Mattel continues to make dolls of all shades. This is also a great learning toy for kids of all races to show that yes...people do come in different colors and we have different faces and hair textures and we are ALL beautiful! I applaud the people who designed this line of dolls and I give this product the highest rating possible. I will probably buy more dolls from this line. I predict these may become a hot item for collectors one day. Good job Mattel!

Like most products sold by Amazon, this doll was reasonably and competatively priced. A very pretty and durable doll that should please both children who will want it to play with or for doll collectors who would want to add this doll to their collection.
