As with all Madame Alexander dolls, the "Favorite Friends" dolls all have beautiful faces with delicate, realistic features--They have been the traditional doll in our family for many years. I received one each Christmas as a child and am now buying them for my granddaughter. "Favorite Friends" have a cloth body and plastic arms, legs and head. When compared with similar dolls the price is amazingly low and an excellent value. Having taught in the Elementary grades for 32 years I have had contact with a lot of little girls and their dolls. As with the American Girl" Collection, any of the "Favorite Friends" are a wonderful, emotionally healthy and age appropriate choice for today's girls in that they are able to relate much more easily to dressing their "friend" for a soccer match rather than hooking a bra or getting ready to go out on a date.
I gave "After School Cool" to my four year old granddaughter last Christmas. I had read reviews of issues in hair styling. However,in spite of repeated combing and changing hair styles, we have experienced no problems--hair clips, etc. for younger girls(toddlers) are just right for this doll. If hair begans to become a little unruly, wet and apply a tiny bit of regular hair conditioner, towel dry and style. After a year our doll's hair looks just as nice as it did when she arrived. Clothing is changed on a daily basis-is durable and has remained in perfect condition. Most clothes made for an 18" doll will fit--but not all. Some of the cheaper clothng is cut too small, esp. for the arms. If shoes--boots are difficult to get on, rub a little powder on the doll's foot and in the shoe and they will slide on more esily.
My granddaughter has experienced only one disappointment or frustration with this doll. The cloth body is certainly more hugable than a totally plastic doll--but the manner in which it is designed allows for no way in which it can sit or stand without being propped against something, such as a pillow. If a tea party or ride on a horse is on the agenda, a lot of help will be needed. I remember having jointed Madame Alexander Dolls which could be posed in standing, kneeling or sitting--legs straight out or bent at the knees, positions. I would gladly have paid a little more for our "Katy" if it would have enabled her to sit on her horse without having to be tied on!
All in all--Beautiful doll at an extrodinary price!

My six-year-old had initially asked me if she could have an American Girl doll for her sixth birthday. I balked at purchasing a doll which is overpriced in my opinion (she received a Rebecca doll from some friends two Christmases ago). I did some research online and when I came across the Madame Alexander 18" after school cool dolls, they seemed like the perfect stand-in for an AG doll. I received the doll in time for her birthday and found it to be surprisingly well-made for the cost which is a fraction of the cost of an AG doll. The torso is soft just like an AG doll and the hair is nice and soft. The doll also has eyes that open and shut and in general, the quality is great value for money. My daughter loves this doll! She only wanted a companion doll for her Rebecca doll and now she has two dolls that she can play with and dress up. Given that I was saving quite a bit by purchasing this doll instead of an AG doll, I went ahead and purchased several sets of clothes for both dolls from New England Doll Closet and they are beautifully-made! Not only that, they fit both dolls perfectly. I purchased outerwear and also a nightie set so that the two dolls can have 'sleepovers'. My daughter has had loads of fun with these dolls and the clothes.

This doll was bought for a 4 year old instead of the really expensive American Girl doll. It is the same size and similar quality/ The hair isn't quite as nice and the clothes were not beautifully made but there are many reasonable outfits from other makers even on etsy to outfit an 18 inch doll. This is a good value and was a well loved present,Honest reviews on Madame Alexander 18" After School Cool - Favorite Friends Collection

This is what my daughter wanted to spend her Christmas money on, and she is extremely happy with her doll. All in all the quality of the doll itself is very good, with the exception of her hair. Being made from a lower quality hair than more expensive dolls combined with the fact that it's rooted rather than wigged just makes her short, above the shoulder hair stay unruly. To make it even worse, the way the hair was clamped in the box has left a large ridge across the bottom, making it even poofier. I plan on steaming it one day, but I'm kind of annoyed that the doll came in need of extensive hair care right out of the box. I should note that she got another doll from this company and it also has some hair issues (long and curly!), but I guess saving $70 over the high end dolls the annoying hair is really a fair trade off.Overall, everything else is pretty great, she's very pretty and seems to be well made. Her clothes are cheaply made, but at this price point, I'm not really going to knitpick on that. Luckily I sew so that problem is easily & cheaply remedied for me, but it may be an issue for people who have to buy clothes. But even with the added expense of outfits, she is still a great bargain over some other dolls.
We also experience the sitting issue, but it's not a big deal to my daughter; she's perfectly okay with sitting her against a wall or chair to play and it doesn't detract from her enjoyment at all. Although I don't advise it, I think if this really bothers you removing a little of the body's stuffing may be a remedy for that. I'm not about to try it, but it could work.
