My daughter loves dinosaurs, bugs and animals in general. We jokingly call her "nature girl." This Christmas she asked for her first Barbie so I went on an adventure to find one who fit her personality. I was delighted to find this one. Her outfit is neat. We *love* the boots and hat. I'm sure they will come off in 3 seconds as it's a universal law that Barbies are naked 70% of their plasticy lives, but my girl will appreciate them anyhow. The accessories could be a little more plentiful and realistic (glittery dinosaur bones? *really*? HAHAHAHAHA), but they are still fun. The packaging is even educational as it gives basic facts about fossils. I also like how this Barbie is associated with the Smithsonian as I spent many a happy visit to their Natural History museum during my childhood--and would like to believe a little money from it goes to them.My only gripe is that the doll only came in blonde (there's also a dark skin/black hair one, but it wasn't at our store)--even though her face was *adorable*. This may come off as nit-picky, but I care a lot about hair/eye color as my daughter is a brunette with brown eyes, and I don't want her growing up thinking she is "less" because 99% of dolls have blonde hair and blue eyes. This doesn't mean she won't have blonde dolls (she currently owns and *loves* her 12" Disney Store Rapunzel doll), but I wanted her first Barbie to look more like her.
I ended up buying an inexpensive brunette Barbie (from the Mermaid Tale series) and swapped the heads. I thought of just swapping the clothes, but swapping heads is less work as I didn't need to remove the dolls from the packaging. Popping off Barbie heads is a little more involved than when I was a silly kid who played jokes on my little sister. These days it helps to use a hair dryer to warm/soften the head and a small flat-head screw-driver to gently pry it off or you risk breaking the piece that secures the head to the neck. Once you have the heads off, they are easy to swap. They slide right back on the necks easily. Now I have an adorable brunette Paleontologist Barbie ready to be wrapped and stashed under the tree on Christmas eve.
Probably TMI for anyone reading this, but if you have a child with a different hair/eye color and want to get make one of these cool dolls look more like her (or him--if it's Ken or a GI Joe), this is a way to go about it.
This review is technically not complete as my little girl hasn't played with (or even seen) this doll yet, but I expect her reaction will be a joyful gasp and followed by a squeal on Christmas day. :)
Update: Paleontologist Barbie is a hit! My daughter calls her "Adventure Girl" and has her go one many adventures with Rapunzel, Tiana, Merida, and the She Hulk. They go hunting for bones and treasures--which they store in the trunk of their purple Beetle (handy for speedy getaways from live dinosaurs and dragons). She has held up fantastically from lots of TLC and the boots surprisingly have not gotten lost too easily as they stay on most of the time and are large enough to be easily found. The hat, on the other hand, tends to disappear more (it would be nice if it fit a little deeper or had elastic to stay on), but that's okay. This doll has turned this anti-Barbie mom into a fan, and I am investing in a few cute outfits for "Adventure Girl's" future expeditions. :)
