Got this for our daughter's 3rd bday. It's super cute, but if you just walk past it it starts crying and making sounds, etc. That part is kind of annoying. If you're up in the middle of the night and it's laying out on the floor and you walk by it will start crying! My daughter likes to play with it with the sound off!

In 2010 I bought this doll off the shelf at a big box store, with a catchy french-sounding name starting with a T. It was great, and my 2yo loved it and bonded with it. Fast forward to summer 2012, and poor "Emma" is somehow lost. For her birthday, I bought my now-4yo a Madame Alexander doll as an "upgrade" lifelike hair, pose-able, etc (cheaper at the big box store starting with a W). The hair was not as much of a thrill as I thought it would be, and DD still longed for Emma. She saved up allowance money for many weeks and finally we ordered a new Emma.

Our Amazon-delivered Emma had the recurring phrase which sounded like "Islam is the Light". Now, If I had not read that particular phrase in print, I'm not sure if I could have picked it out, but as it was, each time her speech cycled around I heard "Islam is the Light". It is rather clear, and you can hear the break in the baby babble and this phrase inserted. Our first "big box" Emma did not have it. I do have a religious opinion, and it was annoying to hear that all the time, although Abby never tried to define it.

Our second daughter was wanting to play with the new Emma all the time, so I ordered 2 new dolls one in pink and one in purple. When they came, much to my relief both are religion free!! Also, these are a slightly different version of the doll. The only difference is that our "Islamic" Emma had a 4 way switch (talking, off, talking-with-soother-option, and motion only/silent) and included a bottle and rattle. Our new Emmas have only a 3 way switch (talking/soothing, off, motion/silent) and had only a bottle no rattle. There is no break in the phrasing, and the baby babble just keeps on going!

As to the doll itself, the original Emma took a beating. Abby thought Emma had the best fun flying off the top of the slide at the playground. Eventually, her arms "broke". They stayed attached, but no longer moved with the animatronics (do we still call it that?) Also, eventually Emma's head came off again, due to much abuse, throwing, dropping, being drug behind the stroller/wagon, etc. We glued it back on twice with Gorilla Glue, and it was still holding strong when Emma got lost.

Also, be aware that this is a motion activated doll. If you walk by, she starts cooing. Yes, she only has about 3 "phrases" and it can get annoyingly repetitive, but the sounds are happy (no crying/whining) and while plenty loud, it's not over the top. Since she is motion activated, she would talk in the night when Abby rolled over onto her it could easily wake a light sleeper. When she was younger, I just turned Emma off for sleeping, but once Abby learned to turn her on I had to take the batteries out. I just kept them out and told her "Emma doesn't talk anymore, sorry". It was a bit sad, but after a couple of days, she never asked again. Now my girls are old enough to leave the switch off or have the doll removed as their consequence.

I hope this is a thorough explanation and run down of all the features, pros and cons for this doll. My girls love the ones we have, and for around $15-20, they are well worth the couple of years the last one lasted us!!
