(Sidenote: I agree with the comments on the scalper prices for the doll. I stupidly and unknowingly bought dolls at scalper prices when I first began collecting MH. A little more wise, I patiently wait for dolls to show in my local stores. My pocketbook thanks me.)

Catrine is one of the most anticipated releases in the Scaris line. She's been puzzled over and mused about since the first pics of her were revealed at SDCC last year. She's another in the Werecat line, some of my favorite dolls, even though I never bought the Twins. I'd happily pay for them if they had, well, personalities in the webseries, but they don't. Though I've not seen her in action yet, I have no doubts Catrine will have a personality. A catty one. ;) She thinks rather highly of herself. With the beautiful lavender and pinks against the stark white, she should. And I'd agree she's absolutely FABULOUS ... if she were as purrfect as pictured.

I went to three separate Wal-Marts searching for this doll. Not because the previous two didn't have any, but the ones they had, the quality control on the doll was severely lacking. The first two stores, every doll had some defect from rubbed off paint/mysterious marks on the face to wonky eyes to severely jacked up hair. To most, the cosmetic ones are no big deal, but I'm a MIB collector. I need her to look good in the box. I finally found ONE decent Catrine, at the very back of the row in the third Wal-Mart, which I decided I could salvage. There was a weird beige spot on her cheek that wiped away easily with soap and water. But I'm glad I didn't buy online, who knows what wonky mess I would've been sent.

From what I've heard, the first batches of exclusives are always full of QC issues. The stories about the paint jobs on the Toys R Us exclusive Werecat Twins and some funkity hair and makeup issues on the Wal-Mart exclusive Cupid doll WOW. Seems as though it's par for the course and it's ridiculous. As others have said, Mattel is making massive bank on the Monster High line. And they should be able to provide all fans collectors and little girls alike with well-made dolls from batch one. I can't even imagine what little girl would've settled for some of *The Walking Dead*-styled horrors I saw on those shelves last week. It's your #2 cash cow for girls, Mattel. Wake up and smell the disenchantment from your consumers. Better quality control and better distribution!

I got lucky and found this pretty kitty at my local Walmart for $19.99. I was lucky in that she had no quality control issues at all. Her hair, makeup, everything was perfect. She is simply gorgeous. I'll start at the top. She has an adorable shoulder length bob with the ends curled under towards her face in hard sprayed curls. Her hair is mostly light lavender with a few streaks of fuschia throughout. Her dainty little white ears peek through the top of her hair....magnifique!! On the right side of her head she has one little hard sprayed curl wrapped up just about eye level. Her facepaint is to die for!! She has full lavendar lips, and just the very tip of her feline nose is the same shade. Her eyes are very light blue and are accentuated with cotton candy pink shadow from lashline to browbone, and palelavendar eyebrows. She has an adorable little beauty mark just under her left eye. Her whole body is sold white, she has no stipes like the previous werecat dolls which I really like. She wears a silky striped shirt in shades of purple, white, black, and blue. The shirt has a simple boatneck collar and has puff sleeves. Her scarf (which no self respecting scarisian would be without) is lavendar with a black scrollwork pattern. Her skirt has two layers of ruffles, the top layer being a black backround with white purple and blue circles or bubbles, and the bottom ruffle being the same material as her shirt. She wears an adorable lavendar artists belt which has many tools such as brushes, chalks, and grease pens molded into it with a skullette in the front. Her very chic black oversized sunglasses sit atop her head. She has painted on black gloves just like Toralei. Her shoes are adorable. They are lavender closed toes with a pretty rosette at the ankle, a bow on the back, and the the heels are made up patinbrushes with the platform sole looking like stacked chalks. So befitting an artist. She comes with a black satchel with the paris skyline painted across it on the front in a lovely purple shade (the reverse side of the satchel is plain black). Each smaller side of the satchel has a little web design imprinted in it. In her arm she carries a cardboard cutout of her "artwork". The booklet that comes with her has no writing in it, it has samples of her artwork, mostly city scenes, and one portrait of Rochelle Goyle. Just the way the colors and patterns flow on this doll is beautiful. She does come with a stand and her bio is featured on the back of the box. Unfortunately in the Scaris movie we did not really see much of Catrine so I hope that she gets featured more in the future. This is an amazing doll and will be right at home in any Monster High Collection.

I found Catrine at Wal-Mart the other day. She was the only one left, and in good condition, so I went ahead and got her over Clawdeen--perhaps a mistake, but there were plenty of Clawdeens left and only one Catrine. Overall I'm satisfied with my purchase. Catrine's wardrobe is very artsy and her face sculpt and ears are very cute. My one misgiving while in the store was that her nose has a purple rendering of a cat's nose painted on it. It looked very clownish while in the box--she's a *white doll*, after all--but out of the box she looks fine.

My two major issues with this doll are the tail and the hair. The tail falls out of her butt quite easily, which annoys me. This is an easy enough problem for me to fix, though, since I use these dolls as display dolls, or for extremely gentle play only. I'm debating glue, but that seems a little extreme, and I think it'll be fine if I can just find a way to add a little width to the part of the tail that's supposed to be a connector. It doesn't really move or fall out when she's just sitting there, though, so it's a problem I can wait a little to fix.

The hair situation is another matter entirely. The product pictures shown are quite deceptive, since they show fluffed out hair that's probably been professionally styled for optimal pictures. The actual hair on the doll is glued-down and matted. Most of the worst of the problem is partially visible, even when looking head on. I think what happened was, they decided in order to keep the curl (which, some of their Operetta dolls have more curl than this and don't have this problem so color me annoyed), they had to glue them in place. But it backfired, because the glued hair not only looks fake and poorly styled, it clumped weirdly--at least on my doll. So, she's got clumps of curled hair and bald spots in between. I wanted to keep some of the curl, though, because she's clearly supposed to have them, so I rinsed her hair out under warm water, but didn't rinse quite all the glue away. As of this morning she looks much better, but I haven't tried styling or brushing her hair into shape again yet. Hopefully when I do, her hair behaves more like Dot Dead Operetta's. Fingers crossed!

Other than those two issues, though, this is the best Werecat Mattel has put out. I wasn't a fan of the Twins, and Toralei's paint job and body color always seemed garish to me. I really like Catrine, though, and I'm totally glad I found her despite her flaws.

Please do not pay scalper prices for these dolls unless they aren't sold anymore. I bought this doll for $19.97 at Walmart this morning. I am so excited, I will be giving this to my daughter for Valentine's day.
