I purchased Lulu from the World Collection 2 a few months ago. At first I was excited. Lulu is a beautiful doll, and I couldn'tw ait to get her out of the box. However, when I got her home, I discovered that she could barely stand on her own for more than 10 minutes without falling over. I am an adult collector, and I know this might not be an issue at all for most kids, but it's at least something to be aware of, as these are $100 dolls. I have talked to other collectors, and they tell me that the World collection 2 dolls they have all have issues with standing.
Lulu's book is ok. It will not give you an overview of daily life in Kenya, but it does a really good job of showing the contrast between the rich and poor classes of Nairobi (of which Lulu is the former.)
The plot involves a statue being stolen off the set of the television studio where Lulu's mom hosts Kenya Kidz. The theft is blamed on Mukanda the clown, and Lulu decides that it is her job to prove his innocence. The plot takes twists that are not totally believable, even if one can suspend disbelief. Lulu's character also comes across as rather flat. The most you learn about her is that she loves soccer. The most character development we see is when she tells us why she is trying so hard to prove Mukanda's innocence. There is a little bit of realizing what she has compared to what poor people don't have, but even this seems to come across as rather strained.
I'd give the book 3 stars, because of the educational value. There are little snippets of info about Kenya in the back of the book, but I feel like some of those would have been better being worked into the storyline.
The doll I think I would rate about the same, because she is a pretty doll, and most kids probably won't care that she can't stand up on her own without falling off the shelf and bonking them on the head in the middle of the night. But for $100, I'd prefer a doll that can stand on her own two feet. Literally.
